HVIS 2010 in Freiburg

Conference CenterThe 11th Hypervelocity Impact Symposium 2010 will be held in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, (Google Maps) during April 11–15, 2010, with Fraunhofer EMI (Ernst-Mach-Institut) being the host.

Frank Schäfer and Stefan Hiermaier from the EMI are the symposium co-chairs.

The HVIS Symposium is a biennial event that serves as the principal forum for the discussion, interchange, and presentation of the basic physics of high-velocity impact and related technical areas. It is intended for scientists, engineers, and technical managers from academia, industry, government, and defense programs.

ImpactThe HVIS Symposia have a long-standing international reputation as a catalyst for stimulating research in this area through a wealth of oral and poster presentations, and commercial exhibits. The Symposium’s proceedings are the major archival source of papers published in this field.

Freiburg provides a stimulating environment for the Hypervelocity Impact Symposium combining traditions as well as latest ecological thinking with high-tech research at worldwide renowned institutions, including a distinguished university, five Fraunhofer Institutes and one Max-Planck institute.

The University of Freiburg, with its large Faculty for Applied Sciences and R&D institutes, makes up about 20 percent of the city’s total population of 200,000. Its proximity to the French and Swiss borders makes Freiburg a culturally cosmopolitan city in the center of Europe that can be reached by ICE train directly from Frankfurt Airport within 2 hours.

Symposium Topics

ImpactThe Hypervelocity Society is devoted to the advancement of the science and technology of hypervelocity impact and related technical areas, required to facilitate an understanding of hypervelocity impact phenomena. Hereby, hypervelocity impact is defined as the impact regime in which shock effects are important. The Topics of the 11th Hypervelocity Impact Symposium in Freiburg, Germany, are:

  1. Hypervelocity Phenomenology Studies,
  2. High-Velocity Launchers and Diagnostics,
  3. Spacecraft Meteoroid/Debris Shielding and Failure Analyses,
  4. Material Response (including EOS),
  5. Fracture and Fragmentation,
  6. High-Velocity Penetration Mechanics and Target Response,
  7. Armor/Anti-Armor and Ballistic Technology,
  8. Analytical and Numerical Methodologies,
  9. Asteroid Impact and Planetary Defense Technology

On the 11th HVIS, a special session on "Large Meteorite Impact" is planned, extracted from the papers that have been submitted for topic 9. Responsibility for selection of those papers is with the Technical Program Chair.

Venue

Konzerthaus Conference Center

The Symposium venue is the “Konzerthaus Conference Center” (plan), which is conveniently located 5 to 10 minutes from the historic center of Freiburg and situated next to the main train station. It is a modern conference center and boasts inspiring architecture.

The technical sessions will take place in the “Round Hall“, which can accommodate up to 290 participants and is furnished with the full suite of modern technical equipment needed for a conference. Novotel - selectable conference hotelCommercial exhibits will be on display during the entire symposium in the exhibitors‘ area next to the Round Hall.

The conference hotel is situated right next to “Konzerthaus Conference Center“. Close to the symposium place, there is a variety of appropriate accommodations. The guest rooms and suites combine modern amenities, such as high-speed internet connectivity with the tradition of Baden.

Hypervelocity Impact Society

The Hypervelocity Society is devoted to the advancement of the science and technology of hypervelocity impact and related technical areas, required to facilitate an understanding of hypervelocity impact phenomena. Hypervelocity impact is defined as the impact regime in which shock effects are important.

Topics of interest include

  • experimental methods,
  • theoretical techniques,
  • analytical studies,
  • phenomenological studies,
  • dynamic material response as related to material properties (e.g., equation of state),
  • penetration mechanics,
  • dynamic failure of materials,
  • planetary physics,
  • and other related phenomena.

The Society’s objectives are to foster the development and exchange of technical information in the discipline of impact phenomena by promoting technical excellence, encouraging peer review publications, and holding meetings on a regular basis.

These objectives are accomplished through a governing Board of Directors, the officers of the Society and several standing committees. Hypervelocity Impact Symposia are held on a regular basis to provide the opportunities for members of the Society to exchange technical information of interest.
